SQL Server: Completed- SQL Performance Tuning workshop in Chennai August 2011

Hi Friends,

After my performance tuning workshop for a leading bank in Gurgaon in July, it was time to train their other DBA team in Chennai.

This SQL Server training assignment in India was organized by Peopleware India

I had earlier blogged about my Gurgaon training here;

I don’t travel to Chennai too often so it was a welcome trip for me. Just like Gurgaon, it was a 4 day workshop for another DBA team of the same Bank & Financial Services company. I must say, the team was well experienced in troubleshooting bottlenecks. We drilled down on many performance counters and their recommended values. We also discussed a few exceptions. We had an interesting conversation on memory consumption and AWE in SQL Server. We spent a good deal of time on query tuning – and the most interesting aspect was index tuning when our search predicates used AND and OR operators. It was interesting to observe the behavior of optimizer. So, let me ask a question, if you have 2 indexes that are exactly the same (identical in terms of key columns and included columns), which index will the optimizer use if it has to use either one of them?

You can post your answer as comments below.

The folks in the classroom participated very well. I enjoyed delivering the workshop thoroughly. Thanks to all the folks. All in all, it was fun.

Here are 2 pics from the class:
