Today, while I write this blog, I am at Microsoft campus in Redmond attending the SQL BareMetal workshop.
Here is something about my BI assignment that I delivered for Microsoft IDC in September 2011. As usual, there is so much that I learnt in this assignment. I met new minds, new personalities, got to know their SQL stories, their issues, remedies, tips, tricks, techniques and bunch of little things! Every assignment makes me a better SQL guy and a better person too 🙂

Previous to my BI assignment, I had delivered a T-SQL batch for MS IDC in the same week. I blogged about that here;
After completing the T-SQL workshop, I delivered the BI assignment in the same week . This was my 12th workshop at MS IDC.
This was a 3 day workshop on Microsoft SQL Server Business Intelligence platform and I covered Analysis Services, Integration Services & Reporting Services. Yes, 3 days is too short to cover these subjects but the need of the hour was to cover some important topics in the stipulated period of time. I started off with advanced DW concepts and we had some good discussions around surrogate keys. This was followed by Analysis Services and I tried my best to cover many aspects of SSAS including Dimensions Modeling best practices, KPIs, Reference & Fact Designs, Calculated Members, Aggregations and a little bit on MDX. I then moved on to SSIS and the key focus of my workshop was Fuuzy Grouping, Fuzzy Lookups, SCD & incremental fact & dimensional load design. I was only left with half a day to and covered a few things related to Reporting Services. All in all, it was a hectic 3 day workshop on BI (only from SQL Server prespective).
The audience at Microsoft was so very professional, many of them knew the subject so well – they matched my speed of doing the labs and it was a real pleasure knowing & interacting with them. Thanks to all the folks. In fact, people inside the classroom make the training successful and all kudos to them! And I made a few friends 🙂 – as always!

Next batch was a T-SQL batch in Gurgaon for the IT arm of one of the largest insurance company in US. I shall write about the next batch shortly.
